HIDDEN IN
THE STARS

BRAND IDENTITY DESIGN

< Back to the Archive

The first-ever Australian Space Agency logo needed to stand out against international space agencies while visually representing agency’s purpose – that is to support the growth of Australian space industry.

The result was a identity which plays on perspectives. At first glance it looks like a satellite view of the Australian continent with dots of various sizes giving the allusion of looking down on the Australian population. However closer inspection reveals it is actually what Australians see when they look to space. Hidden within the logo are Indigenous stars and star maps representing important cultural stories. Working with the agency design team we created a uniquely Australian design which meticulously links our ancient Indigenous heritage to the agency’s purpose and aspirations. The logo celebrates Australia’s Indigenous People as some of the world’s first astronomers who for 50,000 years have used the sky to make sense of the land. We worked with Indigenous astronomy expert Paul Curnow to select significant constellations and received approval from Indigenous elders.
